The Catacombs of Paris
The Catacombs of Paris are known to be the largest grave in the world. This underground labyrinth is also believed to be one of the most haunted places in the world. The graveyard contains a series of tunnels that span more than 200 miles beneath the streets of Paris. These tunnels hold the remains of over six million former city residents.
Those that have dared to visit the Catacombs in the past have reported seeing apparitions, witnessing strange orbs and spectral lights, and being touched by invisible forces. Those that ventured down after midnight also reported that they heard the walls talking to them. Disembodied voices have been said to try to lure adventurers farther into the tunnels, encouraging them to lose their way and suffer a slow and agonizing death. There are rumors of people wandering off into the maze-like tunnels and going mad. There is even video footage of a lost man wandering through the dark corridors until he finally panics, drops the camera, and bolts off into the dark, never to be seen again. Other less fortunate visitors have gotten lost and vanished, only to be discovered decades later.
It all started in the 18th century when Paris opened the Catacombs to clear up some space. The city decided to move the remains of poor citizens underground, where their bones were embedded into stone corridors, and their skulls were arranged as art for tourists to look at. Many tourists have reported attacks by the angry ghosts of millions of displaced dead people. In addition to countless skeletons resting in the hidden lairs of the catacombs, there are trapped spirits who have no choice but to call this their new home. These ghosts are often victims of cultists that are said to steal bodies from morgues and bring them into the catacombs to perform evil rituals. Otherwise, they are likely visitors that unfortunately got lost and were never able to make it out.
So if you're looking for an adventure through a massive, dark, underground cemetery, look no further than the Catacombs in Paris. However, it might be best to visit during the day, and/or with an official tour group.
